Yoga Mats: Modi and Kashmir
FacebookTwitterWhatsapp

On June 21, 2024, the picturesque valley of Kashmir will reverberate with the ancient chants of yoga as Prime Minister NarendraModi leads International Day of Yoga (IDY) celebrations at the SKICC in Srinagar. This year’s theme, “Yoga for Self and Society,” underscores yoga’s profound impact on individual and societal well-being, making Kashmir an apt choice to host the global event.

Since its inception in 2015, the IDY has been a pivotal moment for India to exhibit its ancient spiritual heritage to the world. Each year, Prime Minister Modi has graced iconic locations across India and even the United Nations Headquarters in New York to lead millions in celebrating the timeless art of yoga.

This year’s celebration in Kashmir holds a deeper significance. By choosing the long-disputed region as the venue, Modi aims to promote his vision of “Ek Bharat, Shreshtha Bharat” (One India, Great India) and highlight yoga’s unifying power that transcends regional, religious, and political boundaries. “Yoga is above region, above faith, above everything,” the Prime Minister has always emphasized, underscoring the Yoga-day intent to foster harmony and unity. As the world rediscovers the timeless wisdom of yoga, Kashmir’s role in this year’s celebrations is a poignant reminder of the practice’s deep-rooted connection to India’s spiritual heritage.

Yoga, an ancient Indian practice dating back thousands of years, has evolved into a global phenomenon, celebrated for its physical, mental, and spiritual benefits. Rooted in ancient philosophy, yoga encompasses a wide range of techniques, including postures (asanas), breathing exercises (pranayama), and meditation, aiding in strengthening the mind-body connection and promoting overall well-being.

The United Nations’ recognition of June 21st as International Yoga Day in 2014, a resolution spearheaded by Prime Minister Modi, marked a significant milestone in yoga’s global out-reach. Today, millions worldwide participate in yoga sessions, making it a significant cultural export for India and contributing to the country’s development.

The global wellness industry, which includes yoga, is now worth billions of dollars, with countless yoga studios, retreats, and teacher training programs flourishing worldwide. This global embrace of yoga underscores its universal appeal and the interconnectedness of health and spirituality.

As the ancient chants echo through the Kashmir Valley, the IDY celebrations will not only signify India’s rich cultural heritage but also serve as a powerful symbol of unity, peace, and the unifying power of yoga, transcending boundaries and bringing people together in the pursuit of harmony and well-being.
