Srinagar, June 13: Scores of Teachers Joint Action Committee (TJAC) leaders including its Chairman, Abdul Qayoom Wani were detained after police foiled their proposed sit-in protest outside Civil Secretariat today.

The protest was aimed at impressing upon the state government to address the issues of SSA and RMSA teachers.

Led by Abdul Qayoom Wani, dozens of trade union leaders from Jammu, Kashmir and Ladakh provinces amid sloganeering assembled at Magarmal Bagh here this morning and staged protest to press for the demands of SSA teachers.

As soon as the marchers tried to move towards Civil Secretariat, police deployed in advance stopped them at Jehangir Chowk and bundled scores of the leaders including Wani into already awaiting vehicles.

The leaders were detained at Shaheed Gunj police station for sometime and later released.

“We condemn this action of police; scores of our leaders who had arrived here from length and breadth were arrested and lodged at police station,” said Wani before being detained.

He said the salaries of SSA and RMSA teachers be de-linked with the state sector so that the teachers and their families do not suffer. Wani said SSA issue is not about the pending salaries.

“I would like to reiterate that the issues of teachers were projected before the Chief Minister in wrong manner. They refused to receive salary which was not disbursed as per seventh pay commission rules,” he added.

Wani said instead of hundred and sixty crores, government only released 143 crore which aggravated teachers to the extent they have decided to observe upcoming Eid as black day.

He said the protest program will be intensified after Eid and the government shall be responsible for any eventuality.
