Srinagar: Noted writer and poet Faiyaz Dilbar’s written and Dr Ayash Arif-directed play, Darvesh Nama mesmerised a jam-packed audience at Tagore Hall Srinagar today.

The play was presented by Kalidas Theatre and was part of a drama festival organised by the J&K Academy of Art, Culture and Languages.

The play revolves around the bigger concept of mysticism and Sufi Islam. Influenced by Moulana Rumi and Shamas Tabrez, the play follows the spiritual journey of a young princess who despite having all worldly comforts available, is attracted to the world of Sufis.

The performances of the artists, particularly the ones who played Darvesh (Qazi Faiz) and the princess (Shafia Maqbool), were highly appreciated by the audience besides the strong storyline, set, costumes and background music.

“The writer has a deep understanding of spirituality and mysticism. His concepts are too clear and he has run the story is such a manner that keeps you captivated,” said Syed Showkat Shafi, former University teacher and writer.

“This is the story of every such individual who sees a world beyond its material attractions and existence. His/her very existence ‘out of nothing’ forces him/her to recognise that there is some eternal being who is running the show,” said Dr Shamim Qaisar, who is based in Dubai and is on a brief visit to Kashmir currently.

“Strong script, appropriate star cast, professional direction, aesthetic set and background music – it was a treat,” said a young student Amir.

The audience, which comprised of people from the field of literature, academia, cinema, and theatre besides students, was very appreciative and of the view that such technically sound and aesthetically superb plays would undoubtedly rejuvenate the theatre culture in Kashmir.

Concluding the function, Ayash Arif and Faiyaz Dildar thanked the audience and appreciated their support in helping to keep the theatre culture alive in Kashmir.
