Srinagar: Two firefighters were hospitalized during the preceding night after they suffered asphyxiation while dousing flames in Moominabad area of Batamaloo here, officials said.

They said fire broke out in a hardware store — containing paints and other highly combustible materials– in Mominabad Batmaloo area on late Sunday night and during the firefighting operation two firemen — Noor Alam Jatla and Altaf Ahmad Rather — suffered experienced asphyxiation, following which they were shifted to hospital. While Rather has been discharged, Jatla, officials said, remains hospitalized though he is stable.

“It was a difficult operation in which firefighters from 19 stations and 20 fire-engines (vehicles) were pressed to douse the flames. Initially it took us around six hours to bring the fire under control, however, later the fire reignited in the said building, and it was during the fresh bout of firefighting that two of our colleagues fell unconscious due to asphyxiation,”  Division Fire Officer, Tasaduq Ahmad told ‘Kashmir Images’.
