Pencil as a medium is most preferred by artists especially the beginners. It provides an extra bit of freedom alongside with its ease to access. Beginners need to befriend this medium of art and explore every bit of possibility to set a proper foundation for an exciting artistic career.
Here are some tips to that can help you to begin your journey.
Start with basic shapes: Begin by practicing drawing simple shapes like circles, squares, and triangles. This will help you develop your hand-eye coordination and understanding of proportions.
Experiment with different pencils: Pencils come in various grades, ranging from soft (dark) to hard (light). Try using different grades to achieve varying shades and textures in your drawings.
Practice shading: Shading is crucial in pencil drawing. Learn techniques like hatching (parallel lines), cross-hatching (intersecting lines), and stippling (dots) to create depth and dimension in your drawings.
Use reference images: Drawing from real-life references or photographs can be helpful for beginners. It allows you to observe details, understand proportions, and improve your accuracy.
Start with light strokes: When sketching, use light, gentle strokes instead of pressing hard on the paper. This way, you can easily erase and make adjustments as needed.
Build layers: Instead of trying to achieve dark tones in a single stroke, gradually build up layers of shading to create a smooth and realistic effect. Start with light shading and gradually darken areas as needed.
Pay attention to details: Notice the small details and textures in your subject. Whether it’s the texture of a tree bark or the wrinkles on a face, capturing these details adds depth and realism to your drawings.
Practice regularly: Like any skill, practice is key. Set aside regular time for drawing and experiment with different subjects and techniques. The more you practice, the more you’ll improve.
Don’t be afraid to make mistakes: Mistakes are part of the learning process. Embrace them and learn from them. Use erasers to correct errors and keep experimenting.
Seek feedback: Share your drawings with others, whether it’s friends, family, or online art communities. Constructive feedback can help you identify areas for improvement and gain valuable insights.
Remember, drawing is a journey, and everyone progresses at their own pace. Enjoy the process, be patient with yourself, and keep exploring and honing your skills. Happy drawing!
