Srinagar: Police have arrested eight drug peddlers in Baramulla, Kulgam, and Awantipora respectively, and recovered contraband substances from their possession, a police spokesman said.

Giving details, the spokesman said that one drug peddler, identified as Amir Hussain Dar son of Mohd Sultan Dar resident of Wagoora was arrested at a checkpoint established at Kachwa Muqam Chandoosa. And during the search, 50 grams of Charas-like substance was recovered from his possession.

Similarly, another drug peddler identified as Parvaiz Ahmad Lone son of Ab Rashid Lone resident of Ferozpora Tangmarg was arrested during naka checking at Ferozpora Tangmarg and 30 grams of Charas like substance was recovered from his possession, said the spokesman.

During a naka checking at Durhama Wagoora, police intercepted a suspicious person carrying nylon bag who tried to flee but was apprehended tactfully, the spokesman said, adding, during the search, four Kgs of contraband Poppy Straw and 01gram of Brown Sugar like substance was recovered from his possession. He has been identified as Abdul Hameed Najar son of Mohd Akbar Najar resident of Goshbugh.

During patrolling at Hardu Aboora Bridge, Kunzer, police arrested a drug peddler identified as Manzoor Ahmad Hajam son of Mohd Sultan Hajam resident of Tarhama Kunzer who upon seeing the patrolling party tried to flee from the spot but was apprehended tactfully, the spokesman said.

He said that during the search, 25 grams of Charas-like substance was recovered from his possession.

In a separate operation, police arrested two drug peddlers identified as Reyaz Ahmad Khan and Tariq Ahmad Khan both sons of Gh Nabi Khan, residents of Janbazpora Baramulla during naka checking at Janbazpora Baramulla and recovered 85 grams of Charas-like substance from their possession, said the spokesman.

Meanwhile, in Kulgam, a special team of police at a checkpoint established near Laroo crossing intercepted a suspicious person carrying a bag. During checking, 11 Bottles of Codeine phosphate (Cofmaster-C each 100ml) like contraband substance was recovered from the said bag. He has been identified as Alyas Ahmad Ganie son of Gull Mohammad Ganie resident of Laroo, Kulgam. He has been arrested and shifted to PS where he remains in custody.

In Awantipora, police arrested a drug peddler at Panzgam Crossing and recovered 510 grams of a charas-like substance from his possession, the spokesman said that the arrested drug peddler has been identified as Sheeraz Ahmad Dar son of Ab Rashid Dar resident of Ladermud.

All the accused persons have been shifted to their respective police stations where they remain in custody. Accordingly, cases under relevant sections of the law have been registered at respective police stations and an investigation has been initiated, said the spokesman.

Meanwhile, police have booked two notorious drug smugglers under PIT NDPS Act in Baramulla, the spokesman said.

“The two notorious drug smugglers identified as Jan Mohammad Lone alias Jagawar son of Late Mohammad Maqbool Lone resident of Shaheen Mohalla Delina and Aijaz Ahmad Dar alias Dar son of Habibullah Dar resident of Shalteng Srinagar, have been booked under PIT NDPS Act after obtaining formal detention orders from the competent authority. The booked drug peddlers have been detained and subsequently lodged in Central Jail Kot-Balwal Jammu, the spokesman said.

He said that many cases are registered against these drug peddlers who were involved in promoting drug abuse trade by supplying drugs to local youth of Pattan, Kreeri Wagoora and other areas of District Baramulla.
