Racism has been a significant issue in the world for centuries. Despite the efforts to eradicate it, it still persists, causing division and harm in societies. However, Islam as a religion has long advocated for the equality and fair treatment of all individuals, regardless of their race or ethnicity. Islam condemns racism and promotes anti-racism.
In Islam, the concept of race has no significance. It is not seen as a determinant of an individual’s worth or status in society. The only distinction that matters in Islam is an individual’s piety and righteousness. The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) said, “No Arab has any superiority over a non-Arab, nor does a non-Arab have any superiority over an Arab. No white person has any superiority over a black person, nor does a black person have any superiority over a white person except by piety and good action. “This quote emphasizes the importance of one’s character and actions, rather than their race.
Islam has long been an advocate for the elimination of racism. The Quran states, “O mankind! We created you from a single (pair) of a male and a female, and made you into nations and tribes, that you may know each other. Verily, the most honored of you in the sight of Allah is (he who is) the most righteous of you. And Allah has full knowledge and is well acquainted (with all things).” (Quran 49:13) This verse highlights that diversity among people is not something to be feared or criticized, but rather to be celebrated.
Moreover, in Islamic history, the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) demonstrated anti-racism in his actions. When he established the Muslim community in Medina, he created a brotherhood between the Muslim immigrants from Mecca and the local Arabs, irrespective of their ethnic or tribal backgrounds. Additionally, he appointed Bilal, an Abyssinian slave, to be the first muezzin (caller to prayer), demonstrating that race was not a factor in determining a person’s worth or role in society.
Islam also advocates for social justice, which includes the elimination of racism. Muslims are encouraged to stand up for justice and fairness, and to speak out against any form of discrimination. The Quran states, “And let not the hatred of others make you avoid justice. Be just: that is nearer to piety.” (Quran 5:8).
Islam also promotes the concept of “Ummah,” which refers to the global Muslim community. This concept encourages Muslims to feel a sense of responsibility for the well-being of their fellow Muslims, regardless of their race or ethnicity. This sense of responsibility extends to all people, as the Quran states, “Allah does not forbid you from showing kindness and dealing justly with those who have not fought against you because of religion and have not driven you out of your homes. Allah loves just dealers.” (Quran 60:8).
Islam is a religion that emphasizes equality and justice for all individuals. Racism goes against the fundamental principles of Islam and is condemned in the Quran and the Prophet Muhammad’s actions. Islam promotes the concept of the Ummah, encouraging Muslims to stand up for social justice and equality for all people. By understanding and practicing the teachings of Islam, individuals can contribute to the elimination of racism and promote anti-racism in their communities.
