Registrar Dr Nisar Ahmad Mir flagged off the race at Nishat, and later distributed prizes among the winners at the Kashmir University campus where the race culminated.

The event was held on directions of Ministry of Youth Services and Sports, Government of India, as part of the country-wide celebration of the World Bicycle Day.

Interacting with the participating students from the University, its affiliated colleges and some select higher secondary schools in Kashmir, Dr Nisar said such events aren’t merely ritualistic but aim at spreading the larger message of the importance of good physical wellbeing among the masses.

He said the student community is the best mode of spreading this message at grassroots level.

Dr Nisar also complimented the Office of NSS for ensuring mass participation of students in the cycle race.

Programme Coordinator NSS KU Dr Mussavir Ahmad spoke about major objectives of the World Bicycle Day and importance of holding such community-level awareness programmes about the importance of using bicycles to commute from one place to another. He thanked the University authorities and SSP (Traffic) Srinagar for their support and cooperation in facilitating the mega event.

The Registrar later distributed prizes among the winning colleges. Islamia College Srinagar bagged the first position, while the second, third and fourth positions went to Gandhi Memorial College.

The flag-off and prize distribution ceremonies were attended by Programme Officers and staff of NSS.
