KU’s inter-college road race sees active participation of girl students

Srinagar: The Directorate of Physical Education and Sports (DPES), University of Kashmir, on Tuesday organised an inter-college road race (women).

More than 100 girl students from 17 affiliated colleges  participated in the race, which was flagged off by Registrar Dr Nisar Ahmad Mir from Shalimar Ghat. It culminated at Kashmir University’s Rumi Gate.

Vice-Chancellor Prof Nilofer Khan chaired the prize-distribution ceremony and encouraged the participating students to continue with their passion for sports events and spread the message of importance of extracurricular activities among their colleagues for their overall personality development.

“Society cannot progress if girl students don’t progress. Our girls are second to none when it comes to bringing laurels with their participation in different extracurricular activities within and outside the UT,” she said, complimenting the DPES for holding the inter-college road race in both men and women categories.

Earlier, Dr Nisar spoke at the flag-off ceremony and encouraged the participants to become leaders in sports events.

Director DPES Prof Showkat Ahmad Shah said that sports activities help participants to build a strong psychological make-up, thus making them to brace and tackle peer pressure and stress effectively. He lauded the efforts of PTIs in ensuring mass participation of the students in the inter-college race.

Sameera Hamid of GDC Ganderbal bagged gold, clocking 16:44 while Rakiya Hameed of GDC Magam and Mahreena Hameed Govt. College of Physical Education Ganderbal secured silver and bronze, respectively, by clocking 17:31 and 17:35.
