Eminent Sufi Poet Zeba Zeenat passes away at 90

Srinagar: Noted Sufi poet, Zeba Zeenat passed away in Hajin area of north Kashmir’s Bandipora on Friday late night. She was 90.

Born in 1934 at Bandipora’s Nadihal area, Zeba was the youngest among six siblings. Her Sufi poetry and spiritual verses flowed freely and would even uplift the spirit of happy occasions in her village.

Zeba’s famous published p-collections include:

The demise of the poet was widely condoled.

Halqa e Adab Sonawari (HAS) president, Shakir Shafi described Zeba Zeenat as a ‘tall literary figure, who will always be remembered for her prolific sufi works’. “On the account of her lifelong service to sufi literature, Zeba will always be remembered by us all,” he said.

Dr. Reyaz-ul-Hassan, General Secretary, HAS said, “She (Zeba Zeenat) was a noble soul and her death is a great loss to all of us, which cannot be replaced by anything.”

“Her long association with Halqae Adab Sonawari and her contribution to Kashmiri literature, especially Kashmiri Sufi poetry, will always be remembered,” he added.

Meanwhile, Media Secretary of the Kashmir based oldest literary organisation, Azhar Hajini also has expressed his condolences on the death of noted poetess, Zeba Zeenat. “Saddened to learn about the passing away of the poetess, Zeba Zeenat. She made rich contributions to Kashmiri Literature. My thoughts and prayers are with the bereaved family members, well-wishers,” Hajini said.
