While carrying Janki, the devotees including men, women, and children, danced alongside the chariot and distributed sweets among people besides chanted slogans in favour of Lord Krishna.

A devotee Rakesh Pandita said that the festival marks the birth of Lord Krishna, the ninth incarnation of Lord Vishnu, and is celebrated globally by the devotees. “It is indeed wonderful to experience being part of the religious celebration in Kashmir.”

“It is a very important festival of Hindus. We prayed for peace and brotherhood in Kashmir as the festival gives a message of peace and brotherhood. We are highly grateful to the administration and police for their support,” said Ashwani Kumar.

Rakesh Kumar informed that the most important Hindu festival, Janmashtami (Krishna Jayanti) is the birthday of Lord Krishna, the eighth reincarnation of Lord Vishnu who gave the vital message of the Bhagwat Gita – the guiding principles for every Hindu.

“On this day, ceremonies and prayers, dedicated to Krishna, are held at temples. Fasting and prayer is observed till midnight, the time at which it is believed that Krishna was born,” he added.
