Srinagar: An FIR was registered against a private coaching centre here over a video purportedly showing a teacher repeatedly slapping a student, police said on Wednesday.

“Srinagar Police has taken cognisance of the matter and an FIR has been registered at Police Station Sadder, Srinagar. Legal action has been initiated against the individual and the coaching centre concerned for investigation of this case,” the city police said in a tweet.

The Additional District Magistrate of Srinagar had also directed the management of the coaching centre — Hope Classes — to appear before him on Thursday to record his statement before further legal action is taken.

Local news agency KNO reported that while hearing the case today, magistrate listened to both the parties, including the institute management and parents of the student and recorded their statements.

Additional District Magistrate, Srinagar said that the proceedings of the case has been initiated under section 107 and other relevant laws and the teacher in question has already been arrested by the Police Station Saddar.

“Authorities of the Hope Classes have also tendered apology for the act done by their faculty member and they have assured to extend their full support in the investigation process,” he said.

Meanwhile, an official said that during the proceedings of the case, Managing Director Hope Classes said “It’s very unfortunate that such incident took place in our premises, any legal action by the authorities is acceptable. We apologize for the incident to the society and the student in particular.”
