Srinagar: Police on Friday thwarted a protest by Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) activists here against the alleged “black laws” enforced in Jammu and Kashmir after August 05, 2019.

Dozens of PDP activists, carrying placards which read “Repeal black laws”, “Don’t force people for starvation” amid sloganeering, tried to take out a protest march from party office at Residency Road this afternoon. However, police locked the main gate of the office building and did not let them to move out.

“We are protesting against the black laws enforced in J&K after 2019. Swords are kept hanging over our heads, our honor is being trampled day in and day out and the voice of dissent is muzzled,” a PDP activist, Rouf Bhat told reporters.

He said that a peaceful protest was organized on the instructions of PDP president, Mehbooba Mufti, however police locked the main gate of the party office and did not allowed us to move out.

“Is this a democracy, where peaceful protests are disallowed by police? We had organized a protest on the instruction of our president against government’s recent order directing people to register their vehicles with non-J&K registration with local RTO. However police foiled the protest by locking us inside,” he added.
