SRINAGAR: Persian Scholars from Kashmir University Wednesday staged a protest here to seek the former official language of the erstwhile state of Jammu and Kashmir, to be introduced in all schools and colleges in the newly carved out Union Territory.

The protesting scholars expressed ‘disappointment’ over the alleged ‘discrimination’ with the Persian language, which they said was once official and court language of Jammu and Kashmir. The protest was organized by All Jammu and Kashmir Persian Scholars Association (AJKPSA).

KU scholars, holding placards that read “wake up LG administration, save Persian, save heritage” amidst sloganeering, assembled at Press Enclave, to register their protest against the alleged discrimination against Persian language on official level.

“The way government has marginalized Persian, which was official and court language of Jammu and Kashmir for around seven decades, has left us shell-shocked. We demand Persian subject to be introduced in all schools and colleges so as to breathe new life into this saccharine language,” said Mudasar Nazar, president AJKPSA.

“Our sole motive was to convey our message to the LG administration to introduce Persian subject in all educational institutions. Our degrees are useless until and unless the government reintroduces Persian language in J&K,” said Parvaz Chaudhary, a Persian scholar.
