Nandalal Bose painted the famous portrait of Mahatma Gandhi’s Dandi March. The protest where Gandhi was fighting against the British who had imposed the tax on salt.  To mark the date of Dandi march and as the support for the potest, Nandalal Bose painted a black and white linocut print of Mahatma Gandhi walking during the protest.

Nandalal Bose was born on 3rd December 1882 in a middle-class Bengali family who hindered to support him in his journey to become an artist. Defying all the odds Nandalal convinced his family about his decision to study art by joining Calcutta’s School of Art. He became pupil of Abanindranath Tagore and was widely known for his “Indian style” paintings. His art style was deeply influenced by the Tagore family and murals of Ajanta.  Nandalal Bose became one of the most celebrated Indian artists of the 20th century.

His iconic linocut print of Mahatma Gandhi became the symbol of the non-violence movement. He became very popular and people started looking up to his artworks and admiring him for his support for freedom and for his creativity.  After the Independence Nandalal became important person in Indian government activities. He designed the manuscript of the Indian Constitution. The than Prime Minister of India Jawaharlal Nehru himself assigned Nandalal to design the emblem of prestigious government awards like Bharat Ratna and Padma Shri .
