Shopian: One militant has been killed and two Army jawans injured in the ongoing encounter between militants and security forces in Kanigam village of south Kashmir’s Shopian district.

Reports reaching here late night said that one militant was killed and two soldiers injured in an operation launched by a joint team of police, Army’s 44 RR and the CRPF.

The dead body of the slain militant has not yet been retrieved, sources said. The encounter continued when this report was being filed.

Sources said that earlier as the joint team approached the suspected spot, the hiding militants fired on them, triggering a gunfight, said sources.

Some sources said that two to three militants are believed to be trapped in the area.

They said that a ‘lull’ prevailed after a brief exchange of fire between militants and security forces However, the exchange of fire resumed in the late evening.

“All entry and exits points have been sealed and search lights have been installed in the area so that militants don’t flee from the spot,” sources said.

Meanwhile, as a precautionary measure, internet services have been snapped in Shopian district.

Meanwhile, the owner of the house in which two militants including a top JeM commander were killed in a gunfight in Wanigam Pattan has gone missing, his family said on Friday.

They said that the owner, Mehraj-ud-Din Qazi, son of Ghulam Nabi Qazi of Wanigam Baramulla, has been missing for the last two days.

“He has been missing for the last two days. We searched [for] him everywhere but to no avail. We are now filing a missing report with the police,” Syed Aijaz Ahmad Bukhari, brother-in-law of the missing person, was quoted as saying by the news agency GNS.

Qazi (40) is doing business in fruit business and is father of two children.

At the time of filing this report, the family was on the way to the police station to file a missing report.
