According to the locals, the canal has long been blocked with its polluted water stinking very badly. “The wastage from the residential houses of the village directly flows into the canal and the nauseating smell is making our lives miserable,” said the locals.

One of the residents of Darbagh village, Shabir Ahmad Dar said that the waste in this canal has paved the way for the spread of contagious disease.

“The desilting of the canal was done last year but the same was not carried in a proper way as the water in the canal continues to remain dirty and thereby causing immense problems to the villagers,” said Shabir.

Dar told Kashmir Images that the villagers raised the issue several times with the concerned authorities of irrigation department requesting them to sanitize the canal, but so far all our pleas have fallen on deaf ears.

Another resident of the Darbagh village, Nazir Ahmad Shah said that the road that passes by the canal has also turned into a dumping ground making it very inconvenient for the locals and other pedestrians to walk on this road.

“We request the concerned authorities to carry out the desilting of canal,” said Nazir.

Assistant Executive Engineer PHE Irrigation Zainapora Abdul Qayoom Kumar told Kashmir Images that due to the lack of continuous water supply, the waste material has accumulated in the canal.

Furthermore, AEE irrigation blamed the locals for throwing garbage into the cannel.
