Srinagar: Cyber Police in Kashmir has saved two persons from being duped of Rs 2 lakh by the fraudsters, an official said today.

In a statement, a spokesman of the cyber cell said that they received a complaint from an elderly shopkeeper from south Kashmir’s Tral.

“He had received a call from fraudsters posing as staff of the Jammu & Kashmir Bank Headquarters. The caller told him that his ATM card is going to be blocked and in order to renew the same he was asked to provide the card details,” the statement read.

“The complainant who is illiterate took the help of his minor granddaughter and did not mind to share the OTP which he had received shortly. The shopkeeper smelled foul play only when he received a message about debit from his account. Acting on the complaint, the financial fraud team of Cyber Police Kashmir acted swiftly and succeeded in saving the whole amount of victims,” it said.

In a similar phishing (OTP) fraud case, Cyber Police Station Kashmir refunded Rs 72,938 where a government employee of Srinagar city has shared his debit card details.

“The employee later realized that he had been duped, when he received a message from his bank about the debit from his account for a Flipkart purchase. The victim quickly contacted Cyber Police Station Kashmir Zone, Srinagar and Cyber Police Station managed to save the whole amount,” the spokesman said.

Cyber cell has appealed to the general public to remain extra careful while receiving such calls from unknown sources and avoid sharing their ATM card details, bank details, account details, personal details, OTP etc.
