Baramulla, Nov 1: The District Administration Baramulla on Sunday launched fortnight-long celebrations of Janjatiya Gaurav Divas 2026, with a series of programmes planned across the district from November 1 to 15 to highlight tribal history, cultural heritage and government welfare initiatives.
The inaugural programme was organised in a tribal-populated area and featured the release of a district activity calendar, an exhibition showcasing tribal freedom fighters and their contributions, cultural activities and community outreach programmes.
Various government departments participated in the programme and displayed information about welfare schemes and services relating to nutrition, early childhood care, healthcare, education, social welfare, forest conservation, agriculture and horticulture. The activities were aimed at familiarising tribal communities with government schemes, entitlements and livelihood opportunities.
As part of the opening-day activities, the Integrated Child Development Services (ICDS) Department mobilised tribal families through its field functionaries to spread awareness about nutrition and early childhood care. The Health Department organised outreach activities in tribal-populated areas, while the Education Department facilitated student participation and awareness programmes focusing on tribal heroes, history and heritage.
The Social Welfare, Forest, Agriculture and Horticulture departments also participated through information displays highlighting welfare schemes, environmental conservation measures, sustainable agricultural practices and livelihood opportunities.
The Department of Youth Services and Sports and MY Bharat facilitated youth participation and volunteer mobilisation. The District Information Office coordinated publicity, media coverage, branding and documentation of the inaugural programme.
Janjatiya Gaurav Divas is observed annually on November 15 to commemorate the birth anniversary of tribal freedom fighter Bhagwan Birsa Munda, popularly known as Dharti Aaba. The Government of India declared November 15 as Janjatiya Gaurav Divas in 2021 to recognise the contributions and sacrifices of tribal freedom fighters in India’s struggle against colonial rule.
The observance also seeks to highlight the historical role of tribal communities, their indigenous knowledge systems, cultural traditions and contribution to India’s social and civilisational heritage.
The fortnight-long celebrations in Baramulla are intended to provide a platform for greater community participation, promote awareness about tribal history and traditions, and improve access to government welfare and development programmes.
The district administration has planned departmental activities, awareness campaigns, cultural programmes and community outreach initiatives throughout
