SRINAGAR: J&K Bank on Friday organised a breast cancer awareness programme at its Corporate Headquarters here, bringing together medical experts, cancer survivors and employees to discuss early detection, treatment, nutrition and support for patients.
Held under the theme “Know More, Fear Less, Act Early”, the programme was chaired by Executive Director Sudhir Gupta and attended by Chief General Managers Imtiyaz Ahmad Bhat, Ashutosh Sareen and Rajesh Malla Tikoo, besides other senior officers and employees. Divisional and Zonal Offices across Jammu and Kashmir and outside the Union Territory joined the programme virtually.
Addressing the gathering, Gupta said the initiative aimed to encourage open conversations about breast health and create a workplace environment where women feel comfortable seeking medical advice and support.
General Manager Aneeta Nehru, in her opening remarks, stressed the importance of prioritising health, regular screening and seeking medical advice without delay.
Surgical oncologist Dr Shabnam Bashir highlighted the importance of early diagnosis, observing that around 60 per cent of cancer cases reported to her were already at an advanced stage.
She said several cancers could be treated successfully if detected early and called for greater awareness about warning signs and timely medical consultation. She also highlighted tobacco consumption and unhealthy lifestyle choices as contributing factors to cancer risk.
Pain management and palliative care specialist Dr Henana Berjes spoke about the role of caregivers, stressing that cancer care should address patients’ emotional and psychological needs alongside physical pain. She said compassion, patience and practical support from families could significantly improve patients’ experience during treatment.
Onconutritionist Dr Umi Laila highlighted the importance of balanced nutrition during treatment and recovery, saying dietary choices should be guided by individual health conditions and treatment requirements.
Two cancer survivors also shared their experiences, while an interactive session allowed employees to raise questions and seek guidance from the medical experts.
The programme concluded with a vote of thanks by General Manager Hafeeza Rahim.
