SRINAGAR: Sher-e-Kashmir University of Agricultural Sciences and Technology of Kashmir (SKUAST-K) is preparing a policy framework for the revival of Jammu and Kashmir’s silk industry, incorporating recommendations from experts from six countries and Indian research and government institutions.
The roadmap follows a brainstorming session organised by SKUAST-K’s College of Temperate Sericulture on the sidelines of the J&K Agriculture Science Congress 2026. The exercise focused on addressing production and marketing challenges, improving silk quality and productivity, expanding market access and increasing returns for sericulture farmers.
Experts from Uganda, Vietnam, Thailand, Romania, Japan and Turkey participated alongside representatives of the Central Silk Board, the J&K Sericulture Development Department and other institutions.
SKUAST-K Vice-Chancellor Prof. Nazir Ahmad Ganie, who attended as chief guest, said the university had brought together national and international expertise to develop a coordinated strategy for the sector. He stressed the need for scientific research, modern technologies and coordinated action to improve farmers’ incomes, generate rural employment and promote silk-based entrepreneurship.
The discussions covered mulberry cultivation, silkworm seed quality, modern rearing practices, cocoon productivity, silk quality, market linkages and value addition. Participants also called for stronger extension services, combining traditional knowledge with modern technologies and creating more opportunities for young entrepreneurs.
The recommendations will be consolidated into a policy framework for submission to the Jammu and Kashmir Government. The proposed framework will address constraints across production and marketing, strengthen the silk value chain and seek to improve the livelihoods of sericulture farmers.
The session was chaired by Prof. Afifa Shaheen Kamili, former Director of Extension at SKUAST-K, with Prof. M.R. Mir, Associate Dean of the College of Temperate Sericulture, serving as co-chairperson.
The technical sessions were moderated by Prof. I.L. Khan, Prof. K.A. Dar and Dr. Aabid Khaliq Tantray. Prof. Sajad Ahmad Baba and Dr. Parvaiz Nabi Reshi served as rapporteurs, while Prof. Khursheed Ahmad Dar was the organising secretary.
