BANDIPORA: Markets in Gurez remained closed on Wednesday as residents protested the death of a pregnant woman and her unborn baby, alleging that delays in shifting her to a hospital in Bandipora contributed to the tragedy.
The deceased, Haseen Bagem of Mazgund village in Tulail, was taken to a health facility in Sheikhpora on Tuesday evening before being shifted to Sub-District Hospital Gurez. Doctors reportedly advised her referral to District Hospital Bandipora after finding her blood levels critically low. She was declared dead on arrival at the district hospital on Wednesday morning.
The family alleged that snowfall and restrictions on movement delayed the transfer, while officials offered differing accounts of the circumstances. The health department has ordered an inquiry into the incident.
Health Minister Sakeena Itoo said action would be taken if any lapses were established. Residents staged protests in Dawar, demanding accountability over the handling of the case. (KNO)
