Jammu: Railway staff from the Jammu division of Northern Railway provided timely medical assistance to three passengers in separate incidents on Wednesday, an official said.
In the first incident, after a woman passenger, Sweety Kumari, reportedly suffered a cardiac arrest near a train’s entry gate, Chief Ticket Inspector Tarsem Lal and ticket-checking staff member Deepak immediately arranged an ambulance and shifted her to the nearest hospital, the official said.
In the second incident, Rakesh Kumar, a 60-year-old passenger travelling in coach B-11 of train number 22402 from Jammu to Delhi, suffered a severe asthma attack, he said. “Ticket-checking staff member Ajay Kumar alerted Ambala Control and coordinated arrangements to provide the passenger with essential medicines at the next halt,” he said.
In the third incident, a three-year-old child travelling in coach C-17 of train number 26401 suffered a seizure. The ticket-checking staff, along with the Station Superintendent at Srinagar railway station, arranged an ambulance from Ujala Hospital with assistance from the Government Railway Police (GRP) and Railway Protection Force (RPF), he said. The official said the child was shifted to the hospital and is now stable.
Passengers appreciated the prompt response of the railway staff and the hospital administration.
The Senior Divisional Commercial Manager of Jammu Division said the Indian Railways’ responsibility extended beyond transporting passengers to ensuring their safety and well-being during the journey.
He said he held an online interaction with 80 railway personnel on October 13 to sensitise ticket-checking staff to passengers’ needs and equip them to provide immediate assistance during medical emergencies. The initiative will continue in phases to make train journeys safer and more comfortable, he added.
