JAMMU: Courts in Jammu and Kashmir have convicted three persons in a murder case, overturned an acquittal in a fatal road accident case and rejected bail pleas in two separate criminal cases, the Prosecution Department said on Tuesday.
In a case registered under FIR No. 109/2022 at Batamaloo police station, Additional Sessions Judge Farooq Ahmad Bhat on October 13 convicted Hafeeza Begum, Parveez Ahmad Dar and Shahnawaz Ahmad Dar under Sections 302 and 120-B of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) for the smothering death of a married woman at her matrimonial home.
The prosecution relied on circumstantial evidence, witness testimonies and medical evidence to establish the case. Public Prosecutor Riyaz Ahmed argued that the circumstances formed a complete chain pointing to the accused. The court also considered Section 106 of the Indian Evidence Act. The quantum of sentence is scheduled to be decided on October 14.
In a separate case involving a fatal road accident registered at Maisuma police station, Principal District and Sessions Judge Tasleem Arief on September 18 allowed the prosecution’s appeal against an acquittal in the case of State v. Mohd Aslam Bhat.
The court set aside the acquittal after the prosecution argued that the trial court had closed the evidence stage without providing adequate opportunity to examine material witnesses. It directed that the accused face trial proceedings again and instructed the trial court to give the prosecution reasonable opportunities to present its evidence.
Meanwhile, Additional Sessions Judge Doda Archana Charak rejected the bail application of Mohd Arif, an accused in a case registered under FIR No. 239/2026 at Doda police station under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) law. The order was passed on October 9 after the prosecution opposed bail, citing alleged repeated involvement in similar offences and the risk of reoffending.
In another case, Chief Judicial Magistrate Shopian Rayaz Ahmed Choudhary on October 12 rejected the bail pleas of Jahangir Nazir, Akash Nazir, Sahil Shabir and Aamir Ahmed Dar in a case registered under FIR No. 147/2026 involving alleged assault and robbery.
Assistant Public Prosecutor Mohd Yaseen Najar opposed the applications, citing medical evidence, a sequence of alleged violent offences and concerns over possible witness intimidation.
The Prosecution Department said the outcomes reflected the work of prosecutors in presenting evidence and opposing bail applications in cases involving serious offences.
