SRINAGAR: The Srinagar Municipal Corporation (SMC) has made home composting mandatory for its gazetted officers, wherever practicable, as part of efforts to strengthen source-level waste management and promote decentralised processing of biodegradable waste.
According to an order issued by SMC Commissioner Faz Lul Haseeb, all gazetted officers have been directed to segregate biodegradable and wet waste generated at their residences and process it through scientifically suitable home-composting methods.
The civic body said the measure is intended to reduce the volume of wet waste transported to municipal processing facilities and encourage environmentally sustainable waste-management practices.
Under the directive, officers are required to submit geotagged photographs of their home-composting activities within 10 days as proof of compliance. Zonal officers and sectional heads have been tasked with maintaining records and submitting a consolidated compliance report to the Corporation.
The order also stipulates that compliance will be verified before the processing of the concerned officer’s salary for the current month, subject to applicable service and financial rules.
Officials said the initiative is part of SMC’s broader strategy to promote waste segregation at source, reduce waste transportation and strengthen sustainable waste-management practices across Srinagar.
The Corporation said the move is also aimed at encouraging senior officials to lead by example by adopting responsible waste-management practices at the household level. Commissioner Faz Lul Haseeb said the initiative reflects SMC’s commitment to integrating source-level waste management into everyday civic practices and advancing the goal of a cleaner and more sustainable Srinagar.
