Srinagar: The Jammu and Kashmir Home Department has designated 12 sheds at Pantha Chowk on the outskirts of Srinagar as a temporary holding centre for illegal migrants pending verification and deportation.
The notification, issued on September 30, empowers the facility to restrict the movement of and provide temporary accommodation to persons classified as illegal migrants under the relevant provisions of law.
According to the notification, issued under the Immigration and Foreigners Act, 2025, and related directives of the Ministry of Home Affairs, the Lieutenant Governor has notified the sheds as a temporary holding centre/camp for migrants detected by law enforcement agencies.
The order states that individuals lodged at the facility will remain available for deportation proceedings after completion of nationality verification and issuance of travel documents by the concerned authorities.
Authorities have been directed to ensure that all detainees remain physically available for their expeditious deportation once the legal and administrative formalities are completed.
The notification also requires the officer in charge of the holding centre to maintain records, ensure security arrangements, provide basic amenities and comply with all statutory safeguards.
The development comes a day after authorities shifted 150 Bangladeshi nationals, who were allegedly staying illegally in Jammu and Kashmir, to West Bengal for further deportation proceedings.
