Jammu: Divisional Commissioner Jammu Ramesh Kumar on Friday paid tributes to Mahatma Gandhi and former Prime Minister Lal Bahadur Shastri at a Gandhi Jayanti programme organised by the Gandhi Global Family at Lawrence Public School, Sidhra.
Addressing the gathering, Kumar said Gandhi’s ideals of non-violence and self-reliance continued to hold relevance in contemporary times. He said the principle of non-violence offered a way to address many conflicts facing the world and noted that Gandhi’s concept of Swadeshi resonated with the vision of an Atmanirbhar Bharat.
Paying tribute to Shastri, the Divisional Commissioner said his slogan “Jai Jawan, Jai Kisan” remained a source of inspiration for the nation. He urged young people to channel their energies towards constructive activities and contribute to efforts against drug abuse.
Students from government and private schools presented cultural programmes, songs and speeches highlighting the lives and contributions of Gandhi and Shastri. Artists from the Information Department also presented musical tributes during the event.
Among those present were Chief Conservator of Forests Dr V.S. Senthil Kumar, Joint Director School Education (Jammu-Samba-Kathua) Anil Salgotra, District Physical Education Officer Jammu B.D. Sharma and Lawrence Public School Principal Shivani Joshi.
Representatives of the Gandhi Global Family, including its founder and chairman Wing Commander (Retd) M.M. Joshi and other office-bearers, also attended the programme. Students from several government and private educational institutions participated in the event.
