SRINAGAR: Deputy Chief Minister Surinder Kumar Choudhary on Tuesday informed the Jammu and Kashmir Legislative Assembly that 118.06 kilometres of roads have been macadamised or upgraded across Srinagar district during the current financial year through works executed by the Public Works (R&B) Department and the Srinagar Municipal Corporation (SMC).
Replying to a question raised by MLA Ali Mohammad Sagar during Question Hour, the deputy chief minister said 15.43 kilometres of roads have been upgraded in Khanyar constituency under special development directives.
The House was also informed that community centres managed by the Public Works Department in Srinagar generated revenue of ₹6.83 lakh during 2025-26, compared with ₹4.15 lakh in the previous year. The revenue is being utilised for maintenance works.
Providing an update on road widening projects, Choudhary said work on Syed Meerakshah Road (SMS Road) is progressing under the bottleneck removal programme. Of the total 10.33-km stretch, 2.68 km has been widened, while acquisition and compensation processes have been completed for 132 of the 332 affected structures.
On the Khanyar-Zadibal-Pandrathan (KZP) Road project, he said 161 of 314 structures identified for acquisition have been acquired, enabling widening of around 2 km of the 12.45-km corridor.
The deputy chief minister informed the House that a 435-metre road widening project on the Koolipora-Budshah Bagh Road has achieved 231 metres of completed widening. Fourteen of the 29 affected structures have been cleared, while the remaining cases are under process. The project has been approved at an estimated cost of ₹4.5 crore.
He said a proposal for widening and upgrading the Devi Angan-Hawal Road has been submitted under the Central Road and Infrastructure Fund (CRIF) scheme at an estimated cost of ₹31.25 crore, including ₹30 crore for land acquisition and utility shifting. The project covers a stretch of approximately 1.4 kilometres and will be taken up after approval under the scheme.
Regarding the Alamgiri Bazar Chowk project, Choudhary said the work has been sanctioned under the Union Territory sector at an estimated cost of ₹3.35 crore. The project includes acquisition of five structures and redesigning of the junction. An allocation of ₹20 lakh was made during 2025-26, while the proposal is under examination for further funding.
On the Buchpora-Hazratbal Road, he said administrative approval for the revised Detailed Project Report (DPR) is awaited. Land acquisition involving 34 structures has been initiated, with two structures already acquired. Of the ₹7 crore sanctioned for bottleneck removal, ₹20 lakh has been disbursed, while the remaining funds await revalidation.
The deputy chief minister also informed the House that widening work on the Babapora-Haba Kadal Road is nearing completion, with only four structures yet to be removed.
For the Habba Kadal-Gaw Kadal Road, he said acquisition of 24 structures is pending. An amount of ₹21 lakh is available for the project, while additional funds are required to complete acquisition and widening works.
On the Fateh Kadal-Habba Kadal road via Chinkral Mohalla, Choudhary said 176 structures have been identified for acquisition and removal. Of these, 13 structures have been notified under Section 4 and eight structures have already been acquired.
The deputy chief minister said some projects are facing delays due to court cases, pending notifications, title disputes and compensation assessments. He added that the government is pursuing resolution of pending acquisition cases through decisions taken by the High-Level Committee and in coordination with the Collector Land Acquisition to facilitate road development projects across Srinagar.
MLA Hazratbal Salman Ali Sagar also raised supplementary questions during the discussion.
