SRINAGAR: The Jammu and Kashmir Sports Council has facilitated a series of district-level sporting events in Wushu and chess as part of efforts to strengthen grassroots sports and provide competitive opportunities to young athletes.
In Shopian, the three-day ASMITA Wushu Women’s League and District Wushu Championship concluded at the Indoor Sports Stadium, Arhama, with participation from more than 300 athletes representing schools, clubs and the Khelo India Wushu Centre.
Khelo India Wushu Centre Shopian emerged overall champions, while Shahi Hamdan School secured the runner-up position.
Meanwhile, the 6th Kashmir FIDE International Rating Chess Tournament 2026 commenced at the Indoor Stadium, Polo Ground, Srinagar. The tournament, being held from September 25 to 26, has been organised by the Kashmir Chess Club and the All Jammu and Kashmir Chess Association under the aegis of the J&K Sports Council.
Officials said the event provides players from the region an opportunity to compete for international FIDE ratings.
According to the Sports Council, the competitions form part of ongoing efforts to expand access to organised sports and create opportunities for youth participation, particularly in rural and remote areas.
The Council said such events help identify emerging talent, encourage wider participation in sports and provide pathways for athletes to progress to higher levels of competition.
