SRINAGAR: Jammu and Kashmir Police on Wednesday seized six commercial passenger vehicles and registered a case against another vehicle during a crackdown on alleged overcharging and harassment of tourists in Tangmarg area of Baramulla district.
According to police, the special enforcement drive was launched within the jurisdiction of Police Station Tangmarg following complaints against commercial vehicles, including Sumos and auto-rickshaws, accused of overcharging and harassing tourists and visitors.
During the operation, six vehicles were found violating provisions of the Motor Vehicles Act and were subsequently seized, police said.
In a separate action, police registered an FIR against the driver of a Scorpio vehicle (JK05N-6166) after it was allegedly found charging tourists ₹5,000 for travel on the Tangmarg-Gulmarg route, against the government-prescribed fare of ₹2,500.
Police said the case was registered under relevant provisions relating to cheating and an investigation has been initiated.
Officials said the drive was aimed at ensuring fair fares and hassle-free movement of tourists while preventing practices that could adversely affect visitors and the tourism sector.
Police warned commercial transport operators against overcharging, harassment or exploitation of tourists and said strict action would be taken against violators. Tourists were also urged to report such incidents to enable timely intervention and legal action.
