Anantnag: Deputy Commissioner Anantnag Dr Bilal Mohiuddin Bhat on Tuesday reviewed the implementation of the National Mission for Green India (GIM) in the district and stressed the need for coordinated efforts among departments to achieve plantation targets within the stipulated timeframe.
The review meeting was attended by the Conservator of Forests, South Kashmir, Assistant Commissioner Development, Chief Agriculture Officer, Divisional Forest Officers of Lidder, Bijbehara and Anantnag divisions, Assistant Commissioner Panchayat and other officials.
During the meeting, the Deputy Commissioner directed concerned departments to ensure effective planning, execution and monitoring of activities under the mission and emphasised that inter-departmental coordination was crucial for its successful implementation.
He also called for greater involvement of local communities and stakeholders in plantation and environmental conservation initiatives, saying such participation could help strengthen ecological awareness and improve protection of green spaces.
Officials informed the meeting that a plantation target of 20 hectares has been fixed for the current year under the Green India Mission, with plantations comprising coniferous and fodder species.
For the next year, a plantation target covering 69 hectares has been proposed under the programme.
The meeting also discussed identification of open land areas in and around forests for plantation activities, along with measures required for the protection and maintenance of newly planted sites.
Officials deliberated on the provision of fencing and other protective interventions to improve the survival and sustainability of plantations established under the mission.
