NEW DELHI: Domestic liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) consumers will be required to complete Aadhaar-based biometric authentication to continue receiving subsidised LPG refills from October 1, the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas has announced.
According to the ministry, 27.43 crore active domestic LPG consumers, accounting for 89.9 per cent of the total consumer base, had completed biometric Aadhaar authentication as of September 19. Consumers who have already completed the process will not be required to undergo authentication again.
The government said the measure is aimed at ensuring that subsidised LPG reaches eligible households, while preventing diversion of domestic cylinders for commercial or industrial use and identifying duplicate or ineligible connections.
Consumers can complete biometric authentication during LPG delivery through delivery personnel, at distributor showrooms, or through the mobile applications of oil marketing companies — IndianOil ONE for Indane customers, HelloBPCL for Bharatgas users and HP PAY for HP Gas consumers.
The ministry clarified that consumers who do not complete biometric authentication will continue to have access to LPG, but at the applicable market price without subsidy. Such consumers can register their choice through the digital platforms of oil marketing companies, including websites, mobile applications, WhatsApp chatbots and Interactive Voice Response System (IVRS) services. They may also be supplied 5-kg or 10-kg cylinders, subject to local availability.
The government had originally fixed June 30, 2026, as the deadline for biometric authentication but subsequently extended it several times, with the final extension ending on September 14. The nationwide exercise has been underway since October 2023.
The ministry said oil marketing companies have undertaken extensive awareness campaigns, including sending more than 12 crore SMS and WhatsApp messages, organising special camps and conducting outreach through distributors and delivery personnel.
According to the ministry, the implicit subsidy on a 14.2-kg domestic LPG cylinder stood at around ₹210 in September 2026. The government has also provided financial support to state-owned oil marketing companies to offset LPG under-recoveries, which exceeded ₹62,000 crore as of August 31, 2026.
The ministry has urged consumers who have not yet completed biometric Aadhaar authentication to do so before October 1. The LPG services helpline is 1800-2333-555.
