ANANTNAG: Member Legislative Assembly Ghulam Ahmad Mir on Wednesday inaugurated the Inter-District Provincial Level Cricket Tournament for Under-17 girls at Verinag in Anantnag.
The tournament is being organised by the Department of Youth Services and Sports and has brought together teams from 10 districts of Kashmir Province. The participating teams include young players accompanied by their respective escort teachers, coaches and departmental officials.
The championship also includes a talent identification and selection process aimed at identifying players with the potential to compete at higher levels. The players will be assessed on the basis of their performance, cricketing skills and overall potential during the tournament.
Speaking at the inaugural programme, Mir appreciated the department’s efforts to provide young girls with opportunities to participate in organised competitive cricket. He said such platforms could help encourage greater participation of girls in sports and provide them opportunities to develop their sporting abilities.
Four venues have been designated for the conduct of matches during the championship. The department has made boarding and lodging arrangements at Verinag for the participating teams and accompanying officials.
Officials said arrangements have also been put in place for the safety and well-being of the young athletes during their stay and participation in the tournament.
Several committees, including the Medical Committee and Lodging Committee, have been constituted to oversee different aspects of the championship. Other management and coordination teams have also been assigned responsibilities for the conduct of matches and related arrangements.
The tournament is part of the department’s programme to provide competitive opportunities to young sportspersons and encourage wider participation of girls in organised sports across Jammu and Kashmir.
