BANDIPORA: The Gurez administration has ordered the immediate closure of the Markoot Bailey Bridge in Bandipora district after structural damage was detected during an inspection, officials said.
According to an order issued by the Sub-Divisional Magistrate (SDM), Gurez, five pairs of upstream panels of the 160-foot double-double reinforcement Bailey Bridge at kilometre 81.375 were found bent and deformed, prompting authorities to suspend movement of all vehicles.
The bridge will remain closed until a detailed technical assessment is completed and necessary repairs are carried out, the order stated.
Officials said traffic will be allowed to resume only after the structure is declared safe by the Board of Technical Officers.
In the meantime, commuters and drivers have been advised to use the Dawar Bridge or Wanpora Bridge as alternative routes.
The administration has appealed for public cooperation during the repair and restoration work.
Officials said the decision was taken in view of safety concerns arising from the structural defects detected on the bridge.
