RAJOURI: Two persons were killed and four others injured after an Eeco vehicle skidded off the road and plunged into a gorge in the Kandi Mohra area of Kotranka subdivision in Rajouri district on Sunday, officials said.
Officials said six persons were travelling in the vehicle when the accident occurred on the Kandi Mohra road. The injured were rescued and shifted to a nearby health facility, where they were provided first aid before two of them were referred to a higher medical centre for specialised treatment.
The deceased were identified as Khadam Hussain and Shamim Akhter.
The injured have been identified as Mohd Azam (60), son of Mir Baz; Ibrar Ahmed (35), son of Mohd Azam; Imtiaz Ahmed (18), son of Mohd Azam; and Mohd Shakeel (22), son of Munshi Khan, all residents of Rehan village in Kotranka tehsil.
Police have registered a case and initiated an investigation into the circumstances leading to the accident.
Meanwhile, Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha expressed grief over the loss of lives in the accident and conveyed condolences to the bereaved families.
In a post on X, the Lieutenant Governor said he was deeply pained by the tragedy and prayed for the speedy recovery of the injured.
“Deeply pained by the loss of lives in an unfortunate road accident in Kotranka, Rajouri. My deepest condolences to the bereaved families. Praying for the early recovery of the injured. I’ve directed the district administration to ensure best possible treatment to the injured,” he said.
Chief Minister Omar Abdullah also expressed deep sorrow over the accident.
In a statement, the Chief Minister conveyed his heartfelt condolences to the bereaved families and prayed for strength and courage for them to bear the irreparable loss.
He also directed the concerned authorities to ensure the best possible medical care and treatment for the injured and provide all necessary assistance to the affected families.
The accident comes amid continuing concerns over road safety in the hilly districts of Jammu and Kashmir, where difficult terrain and narrow roads often contribute to fatal mishaps.
