Srinagar: Jammu and Kashmir BJP workers protested outside the Congress office here on Sunday over opposition party leader Sonia Gandhi allegedly objecting to the singing of the full version of “Vande Mataram” at an Independence Day event in Delhi.
Carrying BJP flags, the protesters raised slogans against Sonia Gandhi and Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi. They also burnt effigies of the Congress leaders.
They were prevented from reaching the main gate of the Congress office by police personnel, who were deployed in numbers to maintain law and order.
The BJP on Saturday accused Sonia Gandhi of objecting to the singing of the full version of “Vande Mataram” at the Independence Day function at the Congress headquarters in Delhi.
The Congress, however, denied the charge, asserting that she was only asking for a chair for party chief Mallikarjun Kharge as he had been standing for a while.
Addressing a rally in Rajasthan’s Chittorgarh on Sunday, Union Home Minister Amit Shah demanded that the Congress apologise to the people and Bankim Chandra Chattopadhyay, who wrote “Vande Mataram”, for insulting the national song.
