Kishtwar: Five persons were killed after a Scorpio vehicle plunged into a deep gorge at Yaivan near Tender Nallah in the Dachhan area of Kishtwar district on Saturday, officials said.
The accident occurred when the vehicle (registration number HR29AG-0648) reportedly went out of control and rolled into the gorge.
All five occupants are believed to have died on the spot.
Police and rescue teams rushed to the site and launched relief and retrieval operations. The identities of the deceased were yet to be officially ascertained, while the exact cause of the accident was under investigation.
The vehicle was initially reported missing before being traced in the gorge during the rescue operation.
Meanwhile, Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha and Chief Minister Omar Abdullah on Saturday expressed grief over the death of five people in a tragic road accident in the Dachhan area of Kishtwar district and directed authorities to provide immediate assistance to the affected families.
In a condolence message, the Lieutenant Governor said he was pained by the loss of lives in the accident and extended his heartfelt condolences to the bereaved families.
“Pained by the loss of five lives in a tragic road accident in Dachhan, Kishtwar. My heartfelt condolences to the bereaved families,” Sinha said, adding that he had directed the district administration and senior officials to ensure immediate assistance to those affected.
Chief Minister Omar Abdullah also expressed deep sorrow over the tragedy and conveyed his sympathies to the families of the victims.
In his message, the Chief Minister said he was deeply pained by the loss of lives in the unfortunate accident and prayed for peace to the departed souls. He also prayed for strength to the bereaved families to bear the irreparable loss.
Omar Abdullah directed the District Administration Kishtwar and senior officials to ensure that all necessary support and immediate assistance are extended to those affected by the accident.
