Bandipora: More than 350 girls participated in the two-day ASMITA District Wushu League held at Universal Educational Trust in Bandipora, which concluded on Tuesday.
The competition featured athletes from sub-junior, junior and senior categories across nine weight divisions, with participants representing schools and clubs from across the district. The event also served as a talent identification platform, with top performers to be selected for the upcoming Union Territory-level Wushu competition.
Deputy Superintendent of Police (DySP) Bandipora Vasu Agarwal attended the closing ceremony as chief guest, while Universal Educational Trust Chairman Dr Farooq Ahmad and Padma Shri awardee and Nasha Mukt Bharat Abhiyan brand ambassador Faisal Ali Dar were also present.
Agarwal said martial arts could help girls develop confidence, physical strength and self-defence skills. He also highlighted the growing sporting culture in Bandipora and appreciated efforts to provide sporting opportunities to young athletes.
Dar thanked the Wushu Association of Jammu and Kashmir for providing technical support, including certified referees, and acknowledged the support of the Sports Authority of India, Wushu Association of India, Government of India and Universal Educational Trust.
Among the sub-junior winners, Nazrana Majeed of Universal Educational Trust won gold in the 32 kg category, while Uzma Qadir of Shadipora claimed gold in the 42 kg category. Mehreen Mehraj of Ali’s Sports Academy and Ronak Zehra of Shadipora won gold in the 45 kg and 48 kg categories respectively.
Aabiru Din of Shadipora and Iqra Bilal of Ali’s Sports Academy secured gold in the 52 kg and 56 kg sub-junior categories respectively.
In the junior category, Falakun Nissa of Shadipora won gold in the 56 kg division, Laika Mushtaq of Ali’s Sports Academy topped the 60 kg category and Saima Mushtaq of GHS Plan won gold in the 65 kg division.
Medals were distributed among the top performers at the conclusion of the event.
ASMITA, or Achieving Sports Milestone by Inspiring Women Through Action, is an initiative under the Khelo India framework aimed at increasing women’s participation in sports and identifying talent at the grassroots level.
