Bandipora: The two-day ASMITA District Wushu League commenced in Bandipora on Monday, with more than 200 girls from schools across the district participating in the event.
The league is being organised by the Wushu Association of Jammu and Kashmir under the ASMITA (Achieving Sports Milestone by Inspiring Women Through Action) initiative, a Government of India programme under the Khelo India framework aimed at promoting sports participation among women and girls.
The inaugural function was attended by the Second-in-Command (2IC) of 14 Rashtriya Rifles as chief guest, while Padma Shri awardee Faisal Ali Dar was also present.
Addressing the participants, the chief guest encouraged the young athletes to continue pursuing the sport and make use of opportunities available through such competitions.
Speaking on the occasion, Faisal Ali Dar said district-level ASMITA leagues provide an important platform for girls to participate in sports, gain competitive exposure and showcase their talent. He also highlighted the role of martial arts in promoting discipline, confidence, physical fitness and self-defence skills among young girls.
Officials said the competition would serve as a talent identification platform, with outstanding athletes to be shortlisted for the upcoming Union Territory-level Wushu championship. The selected players will represent Bandipora at the UT level.
The event will conclude on Tuesday with a prize distribution ceremony for the winners and outstanding performers.
