Bandipora: Heavy rainfall on Friday triggered flash flood-like conditions in Doudwan area of Saderkoot Bala in Bandipora district, affecting roads and a government school in Malpora.

Officials and local residents said a nearby stream overflowed due to continuous rain, bringing mud, silt, stones and other debris into residential areas.

The debris blocked drains and covered the interior road at Malpora, disrupting traffic. A portion of the Bandipora–Srinagar road was also affected but was later cleared.

Government Primary School, Ganie Mohalla, Malpora, was among the worst-hit public buildings. Mud and debris entered the school compound and several classrooms, damaging classroom mats and other educational material.

Residents urged the administration to clear the roads and drainage system, remove the debris and restore normal functioning at the school.

After receiving information, a police team led by DO Ajas, Araf Ahmad, reached the spot and, with the help of local residents, removed mud, debris and fallen trees. Traffic was restored within a few hours.

An official said the Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Bandipora is closely monitoring the situation. Police personnel have also been deployed at vulnerable places to keep watch and ensure public safety.

The Zonal Education Officer (ZEO), Hajin, said the situation at Government Primary School, Ganie Mohalla, Malpora, is being monitored. As a precaution, classes have been suspended for the day, and the school will remain closed until the premises are declared safe.

Authorities have advised residents and commuters to remain cautious as rainfall continues across the district. (KINS)
