Srinagar: Deputy Commissioner Srinagar Akshay Labroo on Monday reviewed the district’s preparedness to deal with possible weather-related emergencies in view of incessant rainfall and the forecast of adverse weather conditions.
Chairing a meeting of the District Disaster Management Authority (DDMA), Labroo directed all line departments to maintain close coordination and ensure a swift response mechanism across the district.
The meeting was attended by senior officers from the district administration, police, Srinagar Municipal Corporation, the India Meteorological Department (IMD), National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), State Disaster Response Force (SDRF), Health, Fire and Emergency Services, Forest, Food, Civil Supplies and Consumer Affairs, Civil Defence and other departments.
The Deputy Commissioner emphasised the need for inter-departmental coordination and directed officers to keep men and machinery ready, particularly in vulnerable areas, to minimise the impact of any weather-related incidents.
He stressed round-the-clock monitoring of vulnerable locations and instructed departments to respond promptly to any embankment breaches, flooding or other emergencies.
Labroo also directed departments to undertake advance dewatering measures and ensure timely intervention to prevent waterlogging, especially around hospitals, power installations, government offices, major roads and other low-lying areas of the city.
Highlighting the importance of coordinated disaster response, he asked the NDRF, SDRF, district police and civil administration to work in close coordination and pre-position adequate manpower, rescue teams and essential equipment.
He specifically directed the concerned agencies to deploy field staff in advance in vulnerable areas, including Fakir Gujri, Hawan and other higher reaches of the district, to ensure prompt response to any eventuality.
The Deputy Commissioner also instructed all line departments to remain in close coordination with local revenue authorities and ensure immediate on-ground intervention wherever required.
