Srinagar: Former Hurriyat Conference chairman Mirwaiz Umar Farooq on Thursday visited the residence of National Conference (NC) leader and Chief Minister Omar Abdullah’s uncle, Dr Sheikh Mustafa Kamal, to offer condolences to the bereaved family.
It may be recalled that Chief Minister Omar Abdullah has invited the Mirwaiz to join the proposed protest at Jantar Mantar in New Delhi.
After almost three decades, the Mirwaiz and Abdullah families appear to have come closer. In 1987, the Jammu and Kashmir National Conference, led by Dr Farooq Abdullah, entered into an electoral understanding with the Awami Action Committee (AAC), headed by the late Mirwaiz Mohammad Farooq.
Under the arrangement, the AAC was allotted one Assembly seat, which it won.
Mirwaiz Mohammad Farooq was assassinated in 1990. Following his death, Umar Farooq was appointed Mirwaiz at a young age and later became the chairman of the Hurriyat Conference.
After remaining on opposite sides of the political spectrum for years, Mirwaiz on Thursday visited the Abdullah family’s residence to offer condolences on the demise of Dr Sheikh Mustafa Kamal, who served as the additional general secretary of the National Conference.
Mirwaiz visited Kamal’s residence near MA Road and offered Fatiha (prayers for the departed). He met NC president Farooq Abdullah and Chief Minister Omar Abdullah and conveyed his sympathies to the bereaved family.
