JAMMU: The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Wednesday announced that it will hold a protest across Kashmir on July 20 against the National Conference (NC) government, alleging failures in governance and implementation of election promises.
The announcement was made by J&K BJP president and Rajya Sabha MP Sat Sharma during a meeting of senior party leaders at the party headquarters in Trikuta Nagar, Jammu. Leader of Opposition in the J&K Legislative Assembly Sunil Sharma also attended the meeting, which reviewed the political situation and finalised the party’s strategy for the protest.
Addressing the meeting, Sat Sharma alleged that the Omar Abdullah-led government had failed to meet public expectations on governance, employment, public services and infrastructure. He claimed that promises made in the NC’s election manifesto on job creation, youth empowerment, civic amenities and public welfare had not been fulfilled.
He also accused the government of diverting attention from governance issues by raising the issue of statehood instead of addressing unemployment, corruption and development concerns.
Speaking on the occasion, Sunil Sharma alleged that corruption had increased under the present dispensation and criticised the government’s policy of outsourcing jobs, claiming it lacked a transparent recruitment mechanism and deprived deserving candidates of fair employment opportunities.
He further alleged that the government was delaying Panchayat elections to weaken Panchayati Raj Institutions and undermine the three-tier democratic system in Jammu and Kashmir.
According to the BJP, the meeting also reviewed preparations for the July 20 protest and discussed the party’s strategy to highlight what it described as the National Conference government’s failures in governance, public welfare and youth-related issues.
