SRINAGAR: Widespread rain and thundershowers lashed several parts of Jammu and Kashmir on Saturday evening, prompting the Meteorological Centre Srinagar to warn of flash floods, mudslides and landslides in vulnerable areas.
Rain and thundershowers were reported from many parts of the Kashmir Valley and districts including Poonch, Rajouri, Ramban, Doda, Reasi and Udhampur.
An official of the Meteorological Centre said brief but intense showers accompanied by thunderstorms were recorded at isolated places, particularly in north, central and south Kashmir.
The weather office warned that intense rainfall over parts of Kupwara, Baramulla and Budgam districts, as well as Ramban, Reasi, Doda, Batote and Udhampur, could trigger localised flash floods, mudslides and landslides. People have been advised to stay away from streams, nallahs and landslide-prone areas as a precaution.
The MeT Centre said intermittent spells of rain and thundershowers are likely to continue on Sunday, with isolated heavy rainfall and brief intense showers expected over parts of the Chenab Valley and the Pir Panjal range.
From July 13 to 17, the weather is expected to remain generally hot and humid, although scattered places may receive brief spells of rain and thundershowers, mainly over Jammu division. Fresh spells of light to moderate rain are likely at many places across the Union Territory between July 18 and 20, the weather office said.
The MeT Centre reiterated that heavy rainfall and intense showers on July 11 and 12, particularly during the afternoon, evening and early morning hours, could trigger flash floods, mudslides and landslides in vulnerable areas of the Chenab Valley and the Pir Panjal range, and urged people to avoid venturing near nallahs, streams and landslide-prone areas.
