SRINAGAR/JAMMU: Four children, including an eight-year-old boy from Budgam, drowned in separate incidents in Baramulla and Jammu districts on Saturday, officials said.
In Baramulla, an eight-year-old boy drowned while bathing in the Hachari stream at Devpora Dardpora, which falls under the jurisdiction of Kunzer police station.
The deceased was identified as Zaid Javed, son of Javed Ahmad Reshi, a resident of Poshkar Khag in Budgam district.
According to officials, the boy had gone to visit his maternal relatives and entered the stream to bathe when he accidentally drowned. Police recovered the body and, after completing legal formalities, handed it over to the family for the last rites.
In a separate incident in Jammu district, three minor children, including a girl, drowned in a pond at Dhanwal village in the Jourian area of Akhnoor, officials said.
The deceased were identified as Chand (12), Abhishek (11) and Bhagwan Sahai (8). Officials said the children had entered the pond to bathe when they drowned.
Police recovered the bodies and shifted them to a nearby hospital for medico-legal formalities. Proceedings have been initiated to ascertain the circumstances leading to the incident.
Officials said the parents of the three children were natives of Rajasthan and were working at a brick kiln in the village.
