Srinagar: The Jammu and Kashmir Police on Friday issued a comprehensive public advisory urging citizens to remain vigilant against rising cyber fraud incidents, particularly those involving mobile network manipulation and SIM replacement scams.

An official told news agency Kashmir News Service (KNS), the police highlighted key precautionary measures for mobile users. Citizens were advised to immediately contact their telecom service provider if their mobile network suddenly ceases to function, as such disruptions could indicate an attempted SIM swap or fraudulent activity.

The advisory strongly cautioned against sharing One-Time Passwords (OTPs) or any personal details with unknown callers or through unverified links. Residents were also urged to monitor banking alerts and account activity on a regular basis to detect any unauthorized transactions without delay.

The police also warned the public to promptly report any suspicious requests for SIM replacement, which have emerged as a common tactic used by cybercriminals to gain access to bank accounts and sensitive information.

“If you are a victim of cyber fraud, report it immediately by calling the national cyber helpline at 1930 or by lodging a complaint online at cybercrime.gov.in,” the official stated.

The directive comes amid a spike in digital fraud cases across the Union Territory, with authorities emphasizing that public awareness and swift reporting are critical to preventing financial losses. Police have also appealed to citizens to spread awareness among family members and neighbors to collectively strengthen the fight against cybercrime. (KNS)
