Srinagar: Police in Jammu and Kashmir’s Pulwama district booked a terror associate under the stringent Public Safety Act (PSA), 1978 and a notorious drug peddler under the PIT-NDPS.

In a sustained drive against terrorism and drug trafficking, police in Awantipora have booked a terror associate under the PSA and a notorious drug peddler under the Prevention of Illicit Traffic in Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (PIT-NDPS) Act, a police spokesman said.

He said the terror associate, named Suhail Farooq Lone alias Sahba, a resident of Lone Mohalla Nigeenpora Reshipora Tral, was booked under the PSA after obtaining formal detention orders from the competent authority.

Subsequently, he was detained and lodged in Baderwah district jail, the spokesman said.

The Public Safety Act, 1978, says, “If as respects any place the Government considers it necessary or expedient that special precautions should be taken to prevent the entry of unauthorised persons, the Government may, by notified order, declare that place to be a prohibited place. No person shall, without the permission of the Government or the authority specified by the Government, enter or be on or in, or pass over, or loiter in vicinity of, any prohibited place.

“… If any person is in a prohibited place in contravention of any of the provisions of this section he shall be punishable with imprisonment for a term which may extend to one month, or with fine, or with both.”

The notorious drug peddler, identified as Manzoor Ahmad Mir alias Mana Tiger, a resident of Kadlabal Pampore, was booked under the PIT NDPS Act after obtaining formal detention orders from the competent authority and was subsequently lodged in Kot Bhalwal Central Jail, Jammu, he said.

The spokesman said the terror associate was actively involved in providing logistical support, shelter, transportation and other assistance to terrorist outfits operating in the area, and despite repeated preventive measures, he continued to engage in activities prejudicial to the security of the state, necessitating his preventive detention under the PSA.

The drug peddler was a habitual offender with several NDPS cases registered against him, the spokesman said.

He said Mir was actively involved in the illicit trafficking of narcotic drugs by supplying contraband substances to local youth in Pampore and other areas of Awantipora Police District.

His continued involvement in drug trafficking posed a serious threat to society, warranting his preventive detention under the PIT NDPS Act, the spokesman added.
