NIT Srinagar faculty members win top honours at IEI Women in Engineering Awards

Srinagar: Two faculty members of the National Institute of Technology (NIT) Srinagar have been honoured at the IEI J&K Women in Engineering Awards 2026 for their contributions to engineering education, research and innovation.

Dr. Fatima Jalid, Assistant Professor in the Department of Chemical Engineering, received the Gold Award and secured first rank in the Emerging Woman Engineer Award category, while Dr. Janani L., Assistant Professor in the Department of Civil Engineering, was awarded the Silver Award and secured second rank in the same category.

The awards were presented by the Jammu and Kashmir State Centre of the Institution of Engineers (India) during celebrations marking International Women in Engineering Day (INWED) 2026. The event featured a one-day seminar on the theme “Engineering Intelligence” at the IEI Srinagar Centre.

According to the organisers, Dr. Fatima Jalid was recognised for her contributions to engineering education, research, innovation, student mentorship and institutional administration. Dr. Janani L. was honoured for her work in civil engineering education, research and professional development, as well as her role in mentoring students and supporting academic initiatives.

The Silver Award on behalf of Dr. Janani was received by her parents, M. Lekshmipathy and S. Santhi.

Congratulating the awardees, Director NIT Srinagar, Prof. Binod Kumar Kanaujia, said the achievements reflected the institute’s commitment to academic excellence, innovation and research. Registrar Prof. Atikur Rehman also lauded the faculty members, describing the recognition as a reflection of the growing role of women in engineering and scientific research.

The programme began with a welcome address by Er. Ferdous Ahad Bhat, Chairman of the IEI J&K State Centre, who highlighted the increasing contribution of women engineers in shaping innovation and sustainable development. Honorary Secretary Er. Irfan Ahmad Reshi spoke about the objectives of the event and the importance of professional engagement through IEI.

The valedictory session was attended by MLA Lal Chowk Ahsan Pardesi as chief guest and SSM College of Engineering Vice Chairperson Dilafrose Qazi as guest of honour.

The event brought together engineers, academicians, researchers, students, policymakers and industry representatives to celebrate the contributions of women engineers in technology, infrastructure development, innovation and public service.
