Srinagar Police on Thursday said it has arrested eight drug peddlers in separate operations in Baramulla and Anantnag districts.

In the Badambagh area of Sopore, police recovered 150 bottles of Codeine-based syrup from Irfan Ahmad Peer, Ajaz Ahmad Mattoo, and Umer Zahoor Najar, all residents of Badambagh, who were subsequently arrested.

At Sangrama-Seer Crossing, police arrested Majid Ashraf Khan of Peth Seer after his personal search, yielded Spasmo-Proxyvon Plus capsules, a police spokesperson said.

In Baramulla, he said a drug consumer — Ikhlaq Ahmad Khatana of Darakassi — was arrested near DFO Office Tangmarg. Upon his personal search, incriminating articles associated with narcotic substance consumption were recovered from his possession. The accused was subsequently subjected to medical examination, during which he tested positive for Tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), indicating recent consumption of cannabis-based narcotic substances, police said.

Spokesperson also said that police in Anantnag registered six NDPS cases in a single day, leading to the arrest of four accused persons.

During checking at Sarnal Bala near High Ground Crossing, police recovered 1.134 kilograms of cannabis powder from the possession of Mohsin Irshad Want of Al-Farooq Colony, Anchidora.

In another action, police apprehended a drug peddler, Junaid Ahmad Khan of Uranhall, during naka checking at Pazalpora and recovered 88 grams of cannabis sticks from his possession.

On the Pando-Lad Wantrag road, police recovered 205 grams of cannabis powder-like substance from the possession of Shakeel Ahmad Khan of Kehribal Ranbirpora.

Umar Qadir Sheikh of Sheikh Mohalla, was arrested after 54 grams of cannabis-like substance was recovered from him.

Cases under relevant sections of law have been registered at respective police stations for further investigation, police spokesperson said.

He also said opium poppy growing on the land of Ghulam Qadir Wagay of Checkabad, Achabal, was destroyed and a case under Section 8/18 NDPS Act was registered against the accused.

Similar action was initiated against the cultivation of opium poppy crop at Khokharpora Adhal and a case registered to identify the persons involved, spokesperson said.
