Leh: Lieutenant Governor of Ladakh Vinai Kumar Saxena has directed all administrative departments in the Union Territory to promote austerity, adopt sustainable practices and ensure judicious use of natural resources in line with Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s call for resource conservation, sustainable development and self-reliance.

The directions aim to reduce fuel consumption and carbon emissions, promote renewable energy, encourage the use of sustainable products, support healthy lifestyles, strengthen local livelihoods and ensure efficient utilisation of public resources.

The Lieutenant Governor also called for the promotion of domestic tourism, natural farming and renewable energy initiatives across the Union Territory.

Notably, following the Prime Minister’s appeal, Saxena had reduced the number of vehicles in his official motorcade by 50 per cent as part of austerity measures.

He directed all Administrative Secretaries to ensure implementation of the prescribed measures in their respective departments and issue suitable instructions to subordinate offices and field formations.

Saxena said resource conservation, promotion of renewable energy, support to local products, healthy lifestyles and sustainable development are not merely policy objectives but collective responsibilities.

He observed that Ladakh, with its unique ecology and vast potential, is well placed to set an example in implementing sustainable development practices and environmental stewardship.

The Lieutenant Governor called for a coordinated and time-bound approach to translate the Prime Minister’s vision into actionable measures across sectors.

All departments have been directed to submit a consolidated Action Taken Report (ATR) to the Chief Secretary within 30 days detailing steps taken to implement the directions.

Departments have also been asked to launch public awareness campaigns on energy conservation, domestic tourism, local products, healthy lifestyles, natural farming and sustainable development.
